Linear Welding & Fabrication: The Torrance Owner’s Guide
We stock, weld, and install Linear-compatible replacement components for Torrance gates, with most welding and fabrication jobs running between $220 and $650 installed depending on what failed and how much metal needs to be rebuilt. We carry common Linear gate hardware on the truck, so most repairs on the west side of Torrance are done same day, not days later. The typical discovery goes like this: the gate starts dragging, then it hangs and won’t close, and when you walk out to look, you see a mount ear broken off, a hinge cracked through, or a bracket rusted thin at the weld line.
Vance Gate Repair Torrance is an independent service provider. We’re not affiliated with Linear, but we work on their operators and gate hardware constantly, and we know which Linear parts fail first in coastal air that people here just call “the marine layer.”
Which Linear Models This Applies To
This page covers the welded assemblies and fabricated brackets on Linear swing and slide gate operators. The most common pairings are the Linear SL and SLR slide gate chassis, the Linear SW swing gate arm, and the Linear LD line used on lighter driveway gates. Within each line, the mounting bracket, gate picket, and operator post are the components that require welding or fabrication, not the circuit board or motor assembly.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha that trips up a lot of Torrance owners: a Linear SL slide gate from 2016 and one from 2022 look nearly identical from the outside, but the mid-run models shipped with a thinner drive rail bracket. You cannot weld the newer bracket dimensions onto the older chassis without a spacing plate. If you measure the bracket and it’s 3/8 inch thick, it’s the early run. If it’s 5/16, it’s the later one. We keep both on the truck, because guessing wrong means the gate binds at the drive idler.
For the OEM-versus-aftermarket decision on Linear parts: on welded brackets and mount ears, a quality aftermarket piece made from 1/4 inch cold-rolled steel holds just as well as the OEM if the weld is done properly, and it usually costs 30 to 40 percent less. On the drive rail itself, we stick to OEM. The rail hardening spec and the tooth pitch matter too much to take a chance on. We’ll tell you which one applies to your specific model when we’re looking at it, not before.
Signs Your Linear Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

- The gate hesitates at the same spot every cycle. That’s usually a cracked weld on the drive rail bracket. The crack opens just enough under load to skip a tooth, then closes back up when the gate stops. It feels like a motor problem. It’s not.
- The gate sags visibly on the hinge side. A rusted-thin or fractured hinge weld is letting the gate lean. In Torrance, salt air accelerates this on any gate within a few miles of the coast. Once the gate sags, every other component works harder and fails sooner.
- You hear a screech when the gate starts moving. That’s metal riding on metal at a failing weld point or a broken mount ear that’s no longer holding the operator in alignment. Grease won’t fix it; the alignment has to be restored.
- The gate runs fine, then suddenly stops mid-travel. On Linear slide gates, this often traces back to a mount ear that broke off and the operator shifted just enough that the limit switch reads false. The board thinks it reached the stop.
- You can see rust powder below a bracket edge. If you can knock flakes out with a screwdriver, the metal underneath is compromised. This is the point where a weld repair costs $150 to $250 instead of a full bracket replacement at double that.
Before
AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Torrance, a welded bracket or mount ear repair on a Linear operator lands between $220 and $320 in most cases. A full fabrication job, meaning we build a new operator mount plate or rebuild a gate frame joint, runs $380 to $650 depending on how much metal we’re cutting out and replacing. The price is written down and handed to you before we start work. That’s Haven Standard Clause 1, and we don’t make exceptions to it.
Every job includes the removal of the failed part, prep of the mounting surface, the new bracket or weld, re-alignment of the operator, and a cycle test. You get a photo log showing what came off, what went on, and the final position before we leave. That’s Clause 4: evidence on every job. If the weld fails within one year, it’s covered under the 365-Day Done Right Promise. We fix it at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?

Here’s the honest split. What you can safely check yourself: whether a bracket is visibly cracked, whether rust has eaten through an edge, and whether the gate is hanging out of level. Photograph it, email us the photo, and we’ll tell you what we think before anyone drives over. What you should not attempt yourself: welding on a gate operator mount while it’s under spring tension or while the gate is still attached. A slide gate under load can pinch and shear the moment you release a weld point. If the gate is heavy and the weld is load-bearing, that’s not a Saturday project. That’s a call to a fabricator who knows which joints carry weight and which ones just hold alignment.
If you’ve already got the gate lashed open with ratchet straps and you’re not sure what to do next, call us at (424) 373-8425. We’ll walk you through what we need to see.
FAQs
A properly welded bracket on a gate that’s serviced once a year should last the life of the operator, but in the salt air districts of Torrance, especially within two miles of the coast, we commonly see factory welds fail between years six and nine if the gate was never wiped down. Aftermarket brackets with a rust-inhibiting coating add three to five years over untreated steel. Call (424) 373-8425 and we’ll tell you what condition yours is in after a quick look.
Yes, if the crack is localized and the surrounding metal is still sound. We grind it out, reweld it, and stress-test the joint. If the rust has thinned the metal beyond repair, we tell you straight and swap the bracket. The repair call is made on the value of the remaining metal, not on what’s cheaper for us to do. We’re happy to give you a written answer either way.
Most single-bracket jobs are done in 60 to 90 minutes with the gate out of service for about two hours including cool-down and test cycling. Full fabrication work can take half a day, and we’ll tell you that before we schedule, not after we arrive. Same-day service is available for repair work when we have the bracket on the truck, which we do for common Linear models.
We stock the common Linear drive rail brackets, mount ears, and hinge plates for the SL, SLR, SW, and LD lines. We also carry compatible parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls, so if your issue isn’t actually a Linear component we can usually still fix it in one trip. If we don’t have the part, we order it that day and you get a written ETA with the price locked before we buy it.
If your Linear gate is dragging, sagging, or stopped cold and you suspect a broken weld, call us at (424) 373-8425. We’ll give you a straight answer on what it takes to fix it, and the price will be in writing before any torch comes out.
