BFT Gate Motor Replacement: The Torrance Owner’s Guide

BFT gate motor replacement in Torrance typically runs between $850 and $1,650 installed, depending on whether you need an in-ground piston, an articulating arm, or a 24V slide operator. We keep the most common BFT control boards, capacitors, limit switches, and full motor assemblies on our trucks, so most swaps in Torrance happen the same day we diagnose the failure. What we find in this market: the motor itself rarely dies first on a BFT. The capacitor gives out, the limit switch drifts, or a board relay burns, and the whole gate gets written off as needing a motor when the fix was a $40 part. This page covers the difference.

Which BFT Models This Applies To

BFT makes more configurations than most Torrance homeowners realize, and “BFT gate motor” is not one part. The most common units we replace in Torrance are the Deimos series (24V in-ground operators for swing gates, often hiding under a driveway plate), the Phobos line (articulating arm operators bolted to the gate post), and the Icaro or Rigel slide gate motors for rolling or sliding driveway gates. Your BFT model is stamped on a small metal tag near the release mechanism, not on the remote. If the tag is gone or painted over, measure the operator housing: Deimos in-ground boxes run about 15 inches long, while Phobos arm units sit in a roughly 18-by-9-inch case.

For OEM versus aftermarket, the honest answer on BFT is this: control boards and capacitors can be sourced from quality aftermarket suppliers with good results, but the gear assemblies and in-ground pistons we install as OEM. BFT gear tolerances are tight, and aftermarket gears on a Deimos run loud and wear the motor shaft faster than the original. We state which parts are OEM on the invoice, every time, and the written quote lists the part number before we order anything.

One compatibility gotcha with BFT slide operators: the Icaro series runs on either 230V single-phase or 24V DC depending on the revision, and the motor you order has to match the existing transformer and board. A 230V motor on a 24V board is the $600 mistake we see when homeowners order parts themselves online. The tag says the voltage; we check it twice before touching anything.

Signs Your BFT Gate Motor Replacement Is Failing

Signs Your BFT Gate Motor Replacement Is Failing
  • Gate starts, then stalls halfway and reverses. On BFT units this is usually a failing start capacitor or a limit switch that’s drifted out of position, not a dead motor. The control board reads the stall as an obstruction and reverses the cycle.
  • Motor hums but the gate does not move. That’s the capacitor again, or a stripped gear in the reduction assembly. If it hums without movement, stop pressing the remote and call us. Every cycle under stalled load shortens the motor’s remaining life.
  • Gate opens but won’t close, or vice versa. This is almost always a limit switch or a photo-eye issue, not a motor failure. We test continuity at the board before recommending any replacement.
  • You smell burning plastic or electrical heat from the operator box. That’s a failed relay or a shorted winding. This is the one symptom that genuinely points to motor replacement, and it should not be ignored. Kill power to the operator at the breaker.
  • The gate drifts or sags after the motor stops. On in-ground Deimos pistons, this means the internal seals are worn and the hydraulic oil is bypassing. On arm operators, the gearbox brake has given out. Both are repairable with BFT rebuild kits if the housing is intact.

We find the actual fault, not just the most common fault. That matters on BFT because the motor is expensive and the fix often is not.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Torrance, a full BFT motor replacement lands like this:

  • Phobos articulating arm motor replacement: $850-$1,200 installed, including the arm assembly, limit setup, and force calibration.
  • Deimos in-ground piston replacement: $1,200-$1,650 installed, including excavation of the foundation box, new piston, seal kit, and re-bedding the plate.
  • Icaro or Rigel slide motor replacement: $900-$1,400 installed, depending on the rail and whether the gear rack also needs replacement.
  • Capacitor, limit switch, or relay replacement (non-motor fix): $80-$180, same-day, with the part number documented on your invoice.

Every price above is written down and handed to you before any work starts. No ranges on the invoice, no surprise line items. We quote a flat number. The price includes the part, labor, calibration, and the photo record of what we found, what we set, and what we installed. Under our 365-Day Done Right Promise, if the replacement fails within a year for any reason connected to the work we did, we make it right at no charge.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely check a few things with the power to the operator shut off at the breaker: look at the capacitor for visible bulging, confirm the limit switch arms are tight, and listen for the hum-versus-move behavior we described above. That’s where your inspection should stop.

What is not a DIY job is opening a Deimos in-ground box and pulling the piston, because that housing sits under a spring-loaded cover plate and the piston is under hydraulic compression even when the unit is off. Same for any 230V wiring inside an Icaro; that’s line voltage capable of serious injury. If you have a BFT motor that is humming, stalling, or smelling, call us at (424) 373-8425 and we will diagnose it properly, with the power off, and give you the written number before any tool touches the gate.
