Linear Keypad & Intercom Repair: The Torrance Owner’s Guide

We repair and replace Linear keypads and intercom units throughout Torrance, with most keypad swaps running between $240 and $420 installed, and intercom module repairs landing between $185 and $380 depending on the model and what’s actually failed. Same-day service is available for keypad and intercom work. The usual discovery happens like this: the keypad lights up but won’t open the gate, or it opens from inside the house but not from the driveway, or the intercom crackles and then goes silent entirely. In Torrance’s salt air near the coast, we see keypad failures accelerate compared to inland cities because the membrane buttons and circuit contacts corrode faster than the manufacturer’s lifespan estimates assume.

Which Linear Models This Applies To

Linear’s residential line splits into two families: the older AP-5, AM-KP, and AE series (the beige, rectangular units from the 2000s and early 2010s), and the newer M3/ME series, the DKP keypads, and the LRA intercoms. The compatibility gotcha that catches Torrance homeowners: the AP-5 keypad wire connector uses a 5-pin terminal that does not plug into an M3 board’s 4-pin header without a re-pin. We know because we’ve unpicked that wiring mistake more than once on gates near the Del Amo Fashion Center corridor where a previous handyman swapped parts by visual match alone.

If you’re holding the unit and trying to identify what you’ve got, look for the model label on the back of the housing or inside the battery compartment. The AP-2, AP-5, and DKP-LCD keypads each use a different membrane layout and a different mounting screw pattern, so ordering by look instead of model number is how owners end up with the wrong plate holes in stucco. We stock OEM Linear keypads for the AP-5 and DKP series on the truck, along with a solid aftermarket equivalent for the common AM-KP. For intercoms, the LRA-50A and the newer LRA-75C are both serviceable, but the 75C has a plug-in microphone module that you can replace without rewiring the whole unit, and that alone changes the repair price by about a hundred dollars.

Signs Your Linear Keypad or Intercom Is Failing

Signs Your Linear Keypad or Intercom Is Failing
  • Keypad lights but won’t trigger the gate. This is usually the relay on the keypad board, not the keypad itself. Linear’s relays are rated for a certain number of actuations, and a gate that cycles thirty times a day burns through that count in two or three years. We test the relay with a meter before replacing the whole pad.
  • Some buttons work, some don’t. Membrane keypads fail per-column, not randomly. If the 1, 4, and 7 row is dead, it’s a torn trace inside the membrane. No cleaning fixes that; the membrane gets replaced.
  • Gate opens from the house but not from the keypad. That points to the keypad’s power or signal wire, not the gate motor. We check the 12V feed at the keypad first, because a corroded splice in Torrance’s moist coastal air is the single most common cause we find behind a dead driveway keypad.
  • Intercom hums or buzzes but no voice comes through. The microphone element fails long before the speaker does, especially on units mounted facing west into afternoon sun. The LRA series mic module is a known weak point, and it’s a plug-in replacement on the 75C.
  • Keypad works intermittently after rain. Water is getting into the housing. Linear’s outdoor-rated housings hold up, but the gasket at the bottom edge dries and cracks after about five or six years in Torrance sun. Once moisture reaches the board, the pads corrode and the unit is done.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A Linear keypad swap in Torrance runs $240 to $420 installed, which includes the part, the labor, the wire terminations, and the programming. Intercom module repairs land between $185 and $380, depending on whether we’re replacing a plug-in mic, a speaker, or a full board. The range comes down to which series you own: AP-5 keypads sit at the lower end, M3/ME and DKP-LCD units at the higher end because the parts cost more and the wiring is less forgiving.

Every quote is written and handed to you before any work starts, so the price you agree to is the price on the invoice. The keypad or intercom part we install is covered by the manufacturer’s warranty, and our labor is covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if something’s not right within a year, we come back and make it right, no argument, no fee. We also photograph the old part, the new part, and the final wiring before we leave, so you have a record of exactly what changed.

Keypad and intercom work is low-voltage, so the electrical danger is minimal compared to gate motors or springs. What an owner can safely check: the keypad’s display or backlight tells you it has power. A clean disconnect and reconnect of the wiring at the keypad sometimes restores a dead unit. But anything beyond that, especially anything that involves opening the gate operator cabinet or touching the board, is where Torrance owners get into trouble. The gate motor board carries line voltage even when the gate is off, and a shorted keypad wire can take out the control board entirely, turning a $300 keypad job into an $800 board replacement. If you’ve confirmed the keypad has power and it still won’t work, call (424) 373-8425 and we’ll schedule the same day.
